Rules of the Road

One of the best ways to see the island, is getting behind the wheel.  When renting a vehicle in St. John, it is vital to remember that traffic here always flows from the left-hand side of the road.  We drive on the left, yes, the LEFT.  Just imagine cruising along with the wind in your hair and the open road ahead is the ultimate fun in the sun fantasy.  Mountain roads transport you back in time over the hills of St. John.  Picturesque vistas, deserted beaches, delightful restaurants and quaint shops are all within your reach.  Driving around St. John is easy and fun;  here are some things you need to know:

  • When you need directions or information, just ask, Virgin Islanders are glad to help you find whatever you need.
  • Stay LEFT
  • We also share the road with cows, goats and donkeys so be on the lookout.
  • If you get lost, don’t panic – it’s a small island and eventually you’ll find your way.  sometimes getting lost is half the fun.
  • Stay LEFT
  • Be patient with other drivers – islanders stop along the way to meet & greet each other and tourists (like yourself) frequently stop to take pictures of our beautiful isle.
  • There is no one road that reaches all the way around this 9-mile long island.
  • The terrain is very hilly, the roads winding and the curves numerous.  With hair raising descents down mountains, you need to keep your eyes open and stay within or under the speed limit, you may suddently come upon a huge safari bus careening around the corner, a herd of cows having lunch or a couple of hikers strolling along the side of the road.
  • A 4-Wheel drive vehicle is recommended.
  • Downshift, Downshift, Downshift
  • Be cautious, yield to all traffic at intersections.
  • Leave plenty of time to get where you're going. The winding and extremely steep roads make a seemingly short trek anything but a quick venture.
  • Most streets are narrow and blacktopped, but eventually you are sure to encounter some of St. John’s “pavement optional” roadways.

Oh, and don’t forget “STAY LEFT”!
